The metal
Why platinum, and not white gold
Most white gold is yellow gold bleached with a thin rhodium coat. That coat wears through — usually inside a year or two — and the piece starts going warm and yellow at the edges until it is re-plated.
Platinum is white the whole way through. There is no coating to lose. It does not tarnish, and when it takes a knock the metal displaces rather than wearing away, which is why platinum picks up a patina instead of thinning out.
It is also noticeably denser. The same necklace in Pt950 carries real weight in the hand — the part of a piece that photographs can never show you.
