Chain Length Guide: What 18, 20, 22 and 24 Inches Actually Look Like
Chain length is the one spec people get wrong, and it is the one that is hardest to fix afterwards. A stone you are unsure about grows on you. A chain that sits two inches too high never stops bothering you.
This chain length guide covers what 18, 20, 22 and 24 inches actually look like on a body, how to measure yourself in under a minute, and what changes when you hang a pendant on it.
What chain length should a man wear?
20 inches for most men, 22 if you are over six foot or carrying a broader frame. That is the short answer and it is right most of the time.
The longer answer is that length is not really about height. It is about neck circumference and how you dress. A 20 inch chain on a 15 inch neck sits differently than the same chain on an 18 inch neck, because more of the length is being used up going around rather than hanging down.
Where each length actually sits
Measured on an average adult male frame, roughly a 15 to 16 inch neck. Add an inch to the chain for every inch your neck is above that.
16 inches
Sits tight at the base of the throat. On most men this reads as a choker and it will disappear entirely under a collar. It is a women’s length in practice. We stock it on the tennis chain because it layers well as the shortest piece in a stack, not because you should wear it alone.
18 inches
Lands on the collarbone. This is the standard women’s length and the shortest that works on a man. It sits above the neckline of a crew tee, so the whole chain is visible against skin. Good if you want the piece to read as jewelry rather than as part of the outfit.
20 inches
Just below the collarbone, at the top of the sternum. This is the most common men’s length and the one we sell most of. It clears a crew neck, sits above a v-neck, and is short enough that it does not swing when you move. If you are buying one chain and you are not sure, buy this.
22 inches
Mid chest, roughly level with the armpits. Sits on the fabric of a t-shirt rather than on skin. This is the length for a bigger frame, or for anyone who wants the chain read as part of the fit rather than as a detail. Also the first length that comfortably carries a pendant.
24 inches
Lower sternum, around the bottom of the ribcage. It is a deliberate look. On a slim frame it can look borrowed. On a broad one it looks right. This is the standard length for a heavy pendant, because it puts the piece in the centre of the chest where it can be seen rather than tucked under a chin.
How do you measure for a chain?
Two methods. The second is more accurate.
The string method. Take a phone charging cable or a shoelace. Hold one end at the back of your neck and bring it round to where you want the chain to sit at the front. Pinch it there, lay it flat against a tape measure. That is your length.
The neck plus method. Measure your neck circumference where a collar sits, snug but not tight. Then add:
- Plus 2 inches for a chain that sits on the collarbone
- Plus 4 inches for the top of the sternum, the standard look
- Plus 6 inches for mid chest
- Plus 8 inches for a pendant sitting in the centre of the chest
A 16 inch neck plus 4 gives you 20 inches. That is where the standard recommendation comes from, and why it stops being right once your neck is 17 or 18 inches.
Does width change the length you need?
Yes, and this is the part most guides skip.
A wide chain has bulk at the back of the neck as well as the front. A 15mm cuban link uses up noticeably more of its length going around than a 2mm tennis row does. In practice, once you go above about 10mm, size up one length from what you would pick in a thin chain.
Weight matters too. A heavy chain pulls down and settles slightly lower than a light one at the same nominal length. It is not a large difference, but if you are between two sizes on a heavy piece, take the shorter one.
What length do you need for a pendant?
Longer than you think. A pendant hangs below the chain, so the visual centre of the piece sits an inch or two lower than the chain itself.
22 or 24 inches for most pendants on most men. That puts the pendant in the middle of the chest, clear of a collar and clear of your chin when you look down.
Two exceptions. A small pendant, the kind that wears flat under a shirt like the hamsa or the clover, works at 20 inches because it is not competing for space. And if you are layering, the pendant chain should be the longest in the stack, at least 4 inches longer than the piece above it, or they tangle.
Amison lengths, and what we stock
The moissanite tennis chain runs 16 to 24 inches in 2mm through 6.5mm, in solid 925 sterling silver or gold plated silver. Every stone hand set in its own four claw basket. From $315.
The moissanite cuban chain runs 6mm through 15mm. Heavier build, so size up if you are between two lengths. From $510.
If you get it wrong, the exchange programme covers a length swap. You are not stuck with a chain that sits in the wrong place, which is the whole reason this guide exists rather than a size chart with no explanation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common chain length for men?
20 inches. It sits just below the collarbone at the top of the sternum, clears a crew neck and works on most adult male frames. 22 inches is the next most common, for taller or broader builds.
How do I measure my chain size at home?
Measure your neck circumference where a collar sits, then add 4 inches for a chain at the top of the sternum, 6 inches for mid chest, or 8 inches for a pendant in the centre of the chest.
Is 18 inches too short for a man?
Not too short, but it sits high, on the collarbone rather than the chest. It works if you want the chain visible against skin above a crew neck. Most men find 20 inches sits better.
What chain length is best for a pendant?
22 or 24 inches for most pendants. The pendant hangs below the chain, so the visual centre sits an inch or two lower than the chain itself. Small flat pendants work at 20 inches.
Should a thicker chain be longer?
Yes. A wide chain uses up more of its length going around the back of the neck. Above roughly 10mm, size up one length from what you would choose in a thin chain.
How long is a 20 inch chain on the body?
On an average 15 to 16 inch neck it lands just below the collarbone at the top of the sternum, roughly two to three inches below the hollow of the throat.
